Simple themes characterize my work: one tree, a singular point at a beach, a bouquet or a bright spot in the universe. I use vibrant colors to catch the eye, with the intention to create a pause in the viewer's life, to soothe, to cause a smile, to allow reflection, to create a space for change, find a way or a path, whether in life, or, just the moment.
The following collections inform my work: 1) The Long View - my newest endeavor inspired by reflections on time that has passed, current thoughts and how what we do now, impacts the future for others, near and far and ourselves. These paintings are characterized by a limited color palette and views leading to the far away horizon. Mixed Media on canvas. 2) Simplicity and Seasons - primarily watercolors inspired by nature; 3) Changing the Equation - inks on non-porous materials because when using this medium, I broke through many of my established painting routines - and that reflection in everyday life; 4) Floral Whimsy - watercolor and mixed media; and, 5) Vistas West - Mixed Media landscapes which reflect that part of my life when my brother who lives in Red Bluff and I shared in the care of our 101 year old mom. The journey from San Francisco provided me time for reflection and inspiration for paintings that I hope honor the beauty of the landscape through the seasons as well as the memory of my mom.
The underlying philosophy of all my art is community, our connections to it and the circles of life around it. I have been a part of the broader Ingleside District for most of my life and have benefited having wonderful neighbors, a diverse and vibrant community, fresh air and cool fog. To complete the circle, and now that I have "retired," it is my turn to return my benefits to the community. I do this by donating proceeds from paintings to local non-profit community based organizations.
*********************************************** I extend my utmost appreciation to teacher and artist Gayle Rappaport-Weiland who taught me that a little red, a little blue, a little yellow, and a dash of sepia with water will open a world of color, movement, light and creativity.
